HINDUSTAN MEDIA VENTURES LTD - CONSISTENT GROWTH

Financial muscle of many companies badly affected due to prolonged recession of our economy in last few years. A cut in advertisement cost was the first initiative taken by many companies to combat with this situation. Because of this reason , performance of many media companies were muted in recent past. At the time of some revival in offing let us look into one media company which not only survived but continuously improved its business and surprisingly with improvement in profit margins too in past for years.

HINDUSTAN MEDIA VENTURE ( HMVL)  – is the company publishing famous Hindi daily “HINDUSTAN” which is currently standing at the second position(all India basis)  in all Hindi dailies,  next to Dainik Jagran ( As per IRS Survey 2013) and the fastest growing Hindi Daily .Company also publishing two monthlies – Kadambini (Cultural and Literacy magazine)  and Nandan (exclusively for children) and running Hindi news website LiveHindustan.com. Since the business is simple and easy to understand, I am not explaining much about that side. At present “Hindustan” is publishing from 19 locations and at the top position in Bihar and Jharkand . As in the case of any daily , company’s income is coming through subscription charges and advertisement income. Almost 2/3 part of income is coming from advertisement and the rest from subscription charges. In developed countries print media industry is showing negative growth trend due to increasing popularity of  Internet and mobile. But in India , print media is growing at a healthy pace and considering the huge population of currently illiterate and non techno savvy people, growth is expected to continue for many more years. Government’s sincere efforts for illiteracy eradication programmes will positively impact the growth of print media in India in coming years. In order to capitalize any shift of trend in future ,company already entered in web based business through its news website LiveHindustan.com.

Among the many listed media companies , Hindustan Media Venture catching our attention mainly due to the strength of its balance sheet and the resilience it showing during tough business environment. For the last four years company reported steady growth by all parameters and such a growth during the most tough  business environment is really commendable. During this period HMVL ‘s bottom line expanded from Rs.53 Cr to Rs.111 Cr ( More Details in the below Table)

CLICK ON THE IMAGE FOR A BETTER VIEW

Promoters are holding about 75 % stake in HMVL and another 13 % by mutual funds and big investors .Company’s balance sheet is strong with negligible debt and robust operating cash flow . In addition to this, about Rs.400 Cr available as Cash or cash equivalents with the company  . Company can use this huge amount for growth  either through organic or  inorganic expansion or reward its stake holders through share buy back ..etc in future . Considering the strong growth in circulation, possibility of increase in advertisement charges  going forward , stability in raw material cost and above all a very strong balance sheet ,HMVL remaining as one of the preferred pick from media space and I believe  there is lot of value in it and suitable even for law risk investors who are ready to show patience for steady growth.

Hindustan Media Venture ( HMVL) is listed in both exchanges and trading around Rs.187.

    2. I agree with you, VP. This one has another positive. Technically it is in resistance free zone. Fundamentally its ROCE is really enticing. Not too much earnings/share price volatility either. I think you are getting old? Very safe pick this time :)

    3. alphaview,

In a market which is overall ahead of fundamentals, the difference between a punter and an investor is to pick stocks that can give returns and protect capital. The small caps are not worth 4-5 PE which are already at 10 PE and the better stocks are way ahead. I have been recently following this blog and seeing how he plays the market. I must say followers in general do not have a brain of their own and very few tend to learn from the leader. Here Mr VP is advising people to learn from his 25 years experience and understand stock picking which really takes people years to do. Mr VP is experienced and wise and he plays the winners like that. When I saw his previous few picks I was thinking that those are dangerous picks but now with this one, I realize that he is a smart man to pick the small caps when they are thrown away and then move on to better stocks. In case the projections of the govt and the market men do not play as per expectations, you will not be left with small caps and losing 80% of your capital.

So think of investment and not gambling and learn from this gentleman who does all the homework to bring value to you and me. Frankly you can make more money just following his recommendations than investing in the best mutual fund most of the time.

  6. Your result review on Polyplex please - seems another disaster. When we compare Q2 results with Uflex, Polyplex is a third grade stock ,also considering the fact at a time Crude is at its lowest level ( favorable environment for them to grow) . Really, Really Pathetic!!! Hope I can get rid of this next week – switch to Hindustan Media. I am sure that you won’t publish this, because you people never accept your mistakes. Any way I know there is no free lunch out there.

    1. Dear

Since I am a human , surely prone to mistakes and no doubt in it .But in this case I am not sure what the mistake is .This stock suggested as a long term buy about three months back @ Rs.216 and now trading around Rs.260. After the said recommendation it is just three months and only one result is out . You are saying Polyplex is a third grade stock compared with Uflex ,but management pedigree of Uflex is third grade compared with Polyplex..Do you think the effect of fall in crude price will start to reflect from the very next day of such fall ? .Each and every company will keep raw material inventory and they are not buying raw material on every evening from nearby market for next day's production. If raw material price is falling and staying there ,company's using such products will benefit in following quarters or years and not on the next week.If your maximum patience is for three months , better to avoid this blog which may only waste your time and money.

Have just two queries with regards to investing in this stock..

Do you percieve the maagenement to be shareholder friendly? Esp given the fact that they have hoarded the cash on books for so long without having any concrete plans to fund acquisitions or distribute the same as special dividend or buyback shares...

Secondly is this a better stock as compared to DB corp and ENIL from the media sector?

    ReplyDelete

    1. As you are aware. our economy ( not only ours but the entire world) faced tough challenges in past few years and lot of company's went into trouble mainly due to their huge debt burden . Many of these companies are still under threat and trying their level best to come out of debt trap . Considering this special situation it is difficult to fully criticise any management who kept large pile of cash with them . I think , once the stress eases they use this huge amount to reward its share holders in the best possible manner.

DB Corp is also a good stock but compared with HMVL it is trading at a higher market cap based on valuation parameters

In the radio space ENIL is excellent and I am studying about it.

I am an avid follower of your blog and find it very useful as it compliments my skills in stock picking exercise. Would it be possible for you to comment on Basant Agrotech( your old recommendation). Market participants still perceive it as a fertilizer company. The seed business is growing at a very good pace and contributing more towards margins. Management is continuously trying to grow the seed business through marketing etc. I have invested in the stock @ rs 8 and I am a long term investor. The problem is that I have a holding bias and that is preventing me to think about any negatives in the company. To be honest I have found no negatives till now, would love to know your thoughts on the stock right now.

    2) I was lucky to be part of kopran, astra micro and marksans rallies in recent years and have booked profit to take out my capital. Do you think they still have enough in them to give returns from current market price or should I take out all the holdings and look elsewhere.

    site:http://value-picks.blogspot.in/ "XXXX XXXX"

Having said that, I have the following questions.
    1) Any plan to start the GTS game again - we learn a lot from that, from what happenend during GTS 7, might have been few bad fishes in the water, due to them, I think you should not stop this game.

    2) How do I identify a potential multibagger? - I read your post earlier about "FIVE WAYS TO IDENTIFY MULTI-BAGGER STOCKS .....", but my question is specifically on how to start? Since there are 1000's of stocks, how do you recommend we shortlist to 15-20 stocks to study. This seems like searching for a needle in a haystack. Once I have filtered 15-20 stocks, i can study them, but, that itself is a challenge.

I don't know why investors always looking into stocks. Try to look around of you and identify sunrise sectors using your commonsense and then search for companies from that space in listed universe.

SKM is already at PE of 25 (more than Avantis'). Do you still think this is not over valued.

Btw, SKM is taking rest now, got into lower circuits after many days upper circuits.

  87. The best part is that sales grow in line with Net profits. I am tired to see how so many companies boost their sales while they reduce their net margins. Not a bad strategy, but that shows a lack of competitive advantage (inability to growth without price competition).

Does this company trade with ADR?

The stock was recommended at 187 level ... you brought it higher at 240 or above levels and that too huge quantity... and then get worried about falling delivery percentage... and do not want guys to mis-understand you?

Pls ask yourself why did you brought this stock at higher levels and that too near circuit? To ride the rally in stock after Value Pick sir reco??

If no then sit calm you have just invested... I believe there is value but will take time to unlock because market at undecisive levels... it might correct but at the end of of long term you will get good returns... if you are short term trader then get out immediately.
